David Survives Assault on the Streets and Finds Safety and Stability

David

Meet David

David was born in Puerto Rico. His family moved to Los Angeles when he was 12 years old. He graduated from high school, worked various jobs, got married and had kids. Life was going well for David until he lost everything he had and almost lost his life.

David’s Journey

David struggled with drugs and alcohol for 7 years and that cost him is relationships and his livelihood. He realized that he had to quit drinking and is currently 3 years sober. David dug a deep hole during his addiction and struggled to keep a roof over his head and find steady work.

Street violence is one of the leading causes of death for those who are experiencing homelessness. David was a victim of an attack with a baseball bat and ended up in the hospital with a serious head injury. “I was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” recalled David. The hospital case manager told him about Harbor Care and arranged for him to complete his recovery here.

How Harbor Helped David

Before coming to Harbor David was sleeping on the street. No makeshift shelter, no tent, just a cold sidewalk. “I like this place. I have a clean bed and I can take a shower and the food is great,” says David.

Our case managers were able to get David to sign up for benefits he qualified for and found him safe housing. David will not have to return to the dangerous streets that almost cost him his life.
